I know we’re all tired of hearing about COVID-19, so let’s pivot away from that and focus on a topic that is much nicer to think about. I’ve decided to expand the scope of this blog a bit to cover some of my other hobbies and passions, which include good cooking and good eating.
We’ll start with one of my favorite summer recipes that is very simple, easy to make, and guaranteed to cool you off on even the hottest of summer days: Watermelon Aguas Frescas. Aguas Frescas, which means “fresh waters” in Spanish, is a refreshing non-alcoholic fruit drink that originated in Mexico, but is very popular today throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ingredients
Serves 8
- 4 Cups Cubed Watermelon
- 1/2 Cup Water
- Juice of 1 Lime
- 24 Fresh Mint Leaves
- Ice
- Sugar to Taste (optional)
Instructions
- Purée the watermelon, water, and lime juice in a blender until smooth.
- Place 1/2 of a lime slice and 3 mint leaves into each glass and crush with a cocktail muddler.
- Fill each glass with ice.
- Pour the watermelon purée into each glass through a strainer to remove the pulp. While aguas frescas are traditionally served without pulp, if you prefer to have the pulp, simply omit the strainer.
- Garnish with a lime slice and a mint sprig.
Tips
- You can substitute nearly any fruit you wish for the watermelon. Just make sure you remove the skin first. Some of my favorites include mango, peach, and coconut.
- I find making this drink with more watermelon and less water makes it taste even better! I also omit the optional sugar when I make it.
Enjoy.
